Install lots of different emulators, most of which are very good, very easy to use, and have lots of great features, such as chat support, preview screenshots/videos, and the full ability to remap the controls however you choose. Install a different, and much better featured dashboard (menu system), so that you can install and play all of your XBox games from the hard drive, Mine has a 500GB hard drive, filled with emulators and roms, XBox games, and music. Replace the hard drive with one with a larger capacity (it works with most IDE drives, and with some SATA drives via an IDE to SATA converter. Ill buy you a beer !Ī modded XBox (original XBox) is superb! When it's modded, then you can do any or all of the following:
If you have spare time around February, come to Magfest at the National Harbor. Gonna show to my older bro to see if he gets a kick out of it. I have not done that myself but do ftp a game at a time or burn games until I eventually get a good hard drive for cheap.ītw, that playlist made me laugh! Definately remember some of those 90's ads when I was young.
Sorry to have highjacked this thread Tony, but I can sell you a modded xbox card for cheap if you still really aspire to mod it and swap hard drives.
They have a great trade in value for inventory as well (proabably to counter higher prices) and crazy trade events that I want to check out sometime soon. And while some of their select pieces are a little over the market price, they sometimes have some hidden gems for cheap. Estarland does a damn good job cleaning the carts unlike many retailers and resellers, but you definately pay more for it. Im in Maryland, less than 20 miles from Frederick in the town of Poolesville, boardering Leesburg, VA. I'd love to be shown that my old virgin Xbox is worth more than the $8 trade-in value. I almost hope someone can come along and shoot down my post as nonsense.
But it'd probably be easier (and with better results) building an actual PC to do that. If your goal is to have a fairly capable box to run a several-years old version of MAME, it might be worth it. Maybe there is a xbox modding dedicated site that has supply to order, along with what you need to do the softmod. You can't just buy those on newegg anymore. Finding that drive might be a problem - I think the Xbox needs an IDE drive. It has been a long time since I researched this, but IIRC you softmod the xbox first, then add the larger hard drive. I ended up going to and buying a dozen real games (it was cheap - xbox games don't hold value) to add to the few I had bought new, and said good enough. I wasn't really too interested in the emulation potential (this was around the time I was getting the 'real hardware' bug), and looking at the original Xbox catalog, realized there weren't really a whole lot of games I was that hyped to play. After digging into the situation, it looked to me like the main thing people were doing this for was emulation, which I suppose can give some pretty good results since the Xbox is really just an 800mhz PC inside.
Some years ago I looked into modding it, adding the larger hard drive, etc. Other may disagree, but I would also say that the better answer is, "Why?"
